Finding Your Way Back to You: Shifting from “Appease” to Peace
By: Lindy van der Burg, RTC

Are you tired of putting everyone else’s wants and needs over your own?
If you constantly find yourself modifying your behavior to keep the peace, you are not alone. Many people arrive in therapy carrying a heavy, invisible backpack filled with social anxiety, bruised self-esteem, and chronic people-pleasing. Often, these patterns aren’t just random traits; they are survival strategies. If you grew up feeling scapegoated—whether in your family, a friend group, or a workplace—learning to “please and appease” was likely the safest way to navigate your world. It was a brilliant way to protect yourself back then.
But today? It might just be leaving you exhausted.
When “fawning” or appeasing becomes your default setting, setting boundaries feels less like self-care and more like a dangerous confrontation. You might experience a wave of guilt or panic just by saying a simple “No.” You might feel deeply disconnected from your own needs, caught in a cycle of relational difficulties where you give until you are entirely empty.
The Good News? You Can Untangle This.
Healing isn’t about transforming into a completely different person; it’s about safely stepping out of roles that no longer serve you. In therapy, we work together to:
- Quiet the inner critic that fuels social anxiety.
- Rebuild a core sense of self-esteem rooted in who you actually are, not what you can do for others.
- Practice setting boundaries in a way that feels manageable, grounded, and free of paralyzing guilt.
You deserve relationships where your voice matters just as much as anyone else’s. It is entirely possible to move from a place of constant hypervigilance to a life of genuine peace and connection. Whenever you are ready to take that first step, a supportive, judgment-free space is waiting for you. Call us at 250-962-2415.
